How to Prepare Your Home Plumbing and Drainage System for Heavy Storms

Luck isn’t to blame for most home failures in storms. It’s the silent partial blockage in a drain line meeting a volume of water it can’t manage after sitting there peacefully for months. Heavy rain didn’t make problems from nothing. It simply revealed the problems you already had.

Why Storms Turn Small Drain Problems Into Big Ones

A drain that is 60% blocked will function normally on an average day. There will be some water that comes through, so you won’t think much of it. Everyone goes about their business. However, if you attempt to put all the water from a storm through that pipe, the story will look completely different. The fast, high-volume flow will pick up all the loose debris, grease deposits, and root fragments that have been accumulating for months and shove them into the smallest opening in the pipe. What was a slow drain yesterday will be a complete blockage that night, typically at 2 am, typically in the middle of the storm.

This is why preparing for a storm isn’t really about the storm. It’s about identifying and fixing the weakest link in your system before the rain gives them a chance to break. Your house’s drainage isn’t one thing; it’s a chain that runs from your roof to your gutters to your downpipe to the underground stormwater drain and then to the common sewer. Storms will find one weak link in the chain.

Start at the Roof: Gutters and Downpipes

The first component of the whole system is the roof runoff, and it’s the one part of the job most homeowners can actually inspect themselves. Clear leaves, twigs, and moss out of the gutters before the storm season starts, not after the first big downpour. While you’re up there, check for sagging sections, gutters pull away from fascia boards when they’re carrying more weight than they’re designed for, and a sagging gutter overflows exactly where you don’t want it to, right against the house.

Downspouts deserve a look all to themselves. They’re a common blockage point because leaves settle at the bend where the gutter meets the vertical pipe. Run a hose through each one and watch where the water lands. It should discharge at least 1.5 meters from your foundation. Anything closer and you’re saturating the soil right next to your footings, which is exactly how basements flood and slab foundations crack.

Test Your Stormwater Drains Before the Rain Does

Most people wait for a storm to find out if their outdoor drains work. That’s backwards. Grab a bucket, pour water into your stormwater pits and gully traps, and watch what happens. Water that drains fast and clean means you’re fine. Water that pools, drains slowly, or gurgles on its way down means there’s already a partial blockage in the line, and that’s the exact scenario that turns into a full backup the next time heavy rain hits.

This ten-minute test is one of the highest-value things you can do before storm season, because it tells you which drains need attention while you’ve still got time to deal with them calmly instead of during an emergency. Tree Roots Are the Drain Killer Nobody Expects

If you were to talk to a plumber about what causes most underground pipe blockages, they would say roots are usually the problem, not debris. This is because tree roots are attracted to moisture and if a pipe has even the smallest crack or a slightly separated joint, tree roots will find a way to get in. Once inside, the roots will grow larger over time, which will cause the pipe to narrow and the roots will catch any passing debris such as wipes, grease, and silt until the pipe is blocked.

For instance, gurgling sounds from a drain when a toilet is flushed or a sink is running indicate that there is a partial blockage somewhere down the line. When multiple drains are slow at once, not just the sink, but also the shower and the washing machine, the blockage may not be local, but rather in a shared line. If foul smells are coming from outdoor gully traps or pits, there may be waste that is trapped and not clearing properly. Finally, if water is backing up into the shower or bathtub when the washing machine is on, it is quite obvious that something downstream is blocked.

If you are experiencing any of these issues, and especially if you are experiencing several of them, calling a specialist is probably the best course of action. Before making a guess, a camera should be sent down the line. If you suspect that roots are intruding or that a blockage is already partly formed, then local specialists are much more effective than DIY snaking. When you try to clear a root-affected pipe using an auger from the hardware store, you’ll simply break off some of the roots which will become lodged and create an even more serious blockage a few weeks later.

Backflow Prevention: The Problem You Can’t See Coming

During a heavy storm, if the municipal stormwater or sewer system becomes overloaded, it can create enough pressure in the water main to force sewage back into houses. And rather than washing wastewater away from the house, it brings it in. That’s where the backflow prevention valve comes in. A backflow prevention valve, also known as a check valve, is a one-way gate: It allows waste to flow out but stops sewage or stormwater from flowing back in.

If your house is in a flood-prone area or is connected to a combined sewer system, where stormwater and sewage travel through the same pipes, a backflow valve isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s a necessity, and the difference between a stressful storm and needing to hire a hazmat crew. If you’re lucky enough to already have one, remember that the main way it’s like your heart is that it only works if it closes. Before storm season, have a plumber make sure that the flap or check in your check valve isn’t stuck open; testing it should only take a minute.

Sump Pump Readiness

If you have a basement or crawl space below grade, your sump pump is responsible for a task that nothing else in the system can perform. It pulls water out of a low point before it has a chance to cause flooding. Test it now, before you need it to do exactly that. Grab a couple of buckets and pour water into the pit. You should hear the pump kick on and begin emptying the pit. Check this while you’re there, since the intake screen can get clogged and cause the pump to fail.

One important thing to remember: while sump pumps work hardest, the storms that necessitate them often knock out the power. A sump pump that only functions using your home’s electricity is useless during that time. A battery backup costs relatively little to install and provides great peace of mind.

Preventive Hydro Jetting For Recurring Problems

If a drain in your house has gotten stopped up a couple times in the last year or two, and you’ve gone ahead and had the line cleared each time and then crossed your fingers, you don’t really have a working strategy, except a likely repeat of the situation the next time something big gets flushed. The reason the drain clogged two or three times in a relatively short period is probably that there’s simply not as much clearance as there should be, there’s some obstruction still catching things and making a small blockage a more likely event. It could be grease or sludge adhering to the pipe walls in the bit of diameter a standard snake can’t scrub, or it could be small, fine root material infiltrating the pipe, some pipe materials have joints that get a little loose after a few decades.

Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to strip that build-up back to bare pipe wall, rather than just punching a hole through the middle of the blockage the way a standard snake does. For homes with a known problem line, scheduling jetting before storm season means that pipe is running at full capacity when the heavy rain hits, instead of already half-choked and one storm away from backing up.

Your Pre-Storm Checklist

Before the storm season begins, consider the following:

Familiarize yourself with your cleanout access point. This is the capped fitting that allows a plumber to access the line without pushing up flooring or digging into your yard. If you’re unsure of its location, take the time to learn where it is. The last thing you want to do is start looking for it during an emergency.

Know where your main shutoff valve is. If a pipe gives way during a storm, the ability to stop water from entering the house within 60 seconds will be the difference between a small repair bill and extensive damage.

Store an emergency plumber’s phone number in your mobile. The last thing you want to do is to be trawling the internet for a phone number with water flooding your laundry.

Give outdoor drains and pits one more pre-season clean right before the storm season. This is because gutters and gullies will trap more leaves and debris in the weeks leading up to the storm season than at almost any other time of the year.

What to do After the Storm Passes

The work isn’t over once the rain stops. Check your outdoor pits for debris that washed in during the storm and clear it out before it settles and hardens. Keep an eye on your drains over the following week, a slow drain that appears after a storm often means something shifted underground, whether that’s silt, a root fragment, or a joint that’s moved slightly.

Damp patches in the yard that weren’t there before deserve immediate attention. They’re often a sign of a cracked pipe leaking underground, and a crack that’s tolerable today gets worse with every storm that follows. Pipe relining is a trenchless option worth asking about if an inspection turns up cracking or root damage, since it fixes the pipe without digging up the yard.

It’s worth remembering just how much a small amount of water can cost. According to FEMA, one inch of water inside a home can cause up to $25,000 in damage, a number that makes a $200 drain inspection look like the easiest money you’ll spend all year.

Storm damage to a home’s plumbing rarely comes out of nowhere. It’s the result of small warning signs that got ignored until the water pressure was high enough to force the issue. Walk the checklist, fix what’s already weak, and the next heavy storm becomes a non-event instead of an emergency call.
